Sedimentary Rock

I found these on a hike I went on recently about 30 minutes away from where I live. I’m pretty certain these rocks are shale. They’re super thin, the break apart extremely easy, and they’re layered on top of each other. Great for skipping. I found these rocks, in particular, on the top of the mountain by Lake Blanche. These rocks were likely formed when the lake had a bit more water and was slowly washing over them. The lake was probably very still, as it is even today, which allowed gradual deposition.
